East West Book Reviews

If you think eating vegan is for wimps, the Engine 2 Diet could change your mind. Author Rip Esselstyn was a firefighter when he wrote this book; vegan for 20+ years, he thrived in a world where, if you weren't strong, smart and alert, you were—literally-- toast. His “plant-strong” diet is simple: whole fruits, grains and vegetables; no sugar, meat, dairy, or processed oils. What separates this book from its peers are the three approaches Esselstyn recommends to get you plant-strong. First, he details two ways to transition to the vegan lifestyle: gradual, or cold-turkey. Second, he includes three levels of exercise routines, beginning to advanced, which target your legs, arms, core, and cardiovascular system. And third, throughout the book, he teaches how to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your stuff from fire. A good read, with plenty of practical advice (and recipes).

Can you relate to this: you walk into a room and can't remember why? Next time this happens, instead of trying to prod your brain into remembering, let your body lead the way. Hand the reins, and your trust, over to your inner navigator—what Sisgold calls "your personal Google." Our bodies talk to us all the time; but do we listen? In Whole Body Intelligence, Sisgold explains that by shifting our attention from "strenuous mental gymnastics" to physical responses in the body, our inner intelligence will help us make decisions, solve problems, de-stress, overcome limiting beliefs, and head in the right direction. He reviews the scientific facts behind the body-mind connection, offers body-centered life skills to practice, shares success stories from clients and others, includes links to helpful online tools, and finishes up with a 30-day lifestyle plan, complete with specific action steps, to lead readers to becoming Whole Body Intelligent.

When things don’t work out the way we want, we often believe that we’ve failed, we’re somehow damaged goods. Yet, it’s our mistakes that can open our eyes to see new possibilities and purpose. “Welcome the unwelcome,” advises Pema Chodron in the commencement address she delivered to her granddaughter’s graduating class at Naropa University. This gem of a book contains the wisdom shared on that day, and includes an in-depth interview between Chodron and Sounds True publisher Tami Simon on the fine art of failing.
