Holistic Healing

Here’s a guide to tailoring your diet to your digestion. It starts with a simple test (using a soda cracker or piece of raw potato!) to determine how well you digest starch. From there, Dr Moalem, a physician (so he knows people), a neurogeneticist (so he knows DNA) and a best selling author (so it’s a good read), launches into detail. His program comprises five action “Pillars:” Eat for your genes; Reverse aging; Eat umami; Drink oolong tea; and Live slowly. Much of the advice will be familiar—avoid processed food, reduce red meat, exercise regularly—but some will not, such as the focus on “umami,” the insidious effect of emulsifiers as food additives, and the benefits of marinating meat. The book includes numerous specific health tips and ends with sample menus and recipes.

The author studied microbiology at the University of Guelph and spent fifteen years researching microbiology at the University of Ottawa, so he's a germ expert. Being a germ-phobic, I opened this book with some trepidation after reading in bold red type on the back cover: "SOME GERMS ARE OUT TO GET US."

But I plunged bravely onward, opening the book randomly to a page about honey. With its proteins, antioxidants, minerals, fructose, glucose, sucrose and fermented antimicrobials, raw honey can attack bacteria known to cause cavities. Once swallowed, it prevents heartburn and damage to the stomach wall from acid production. How cool is that! And just how does honey manage these miracles? Because in it's raw form (that's unpasteurized), it's fermented, containing several good bacteria and their byproducts.

Flipping to another page, I discovered that Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, two species of probiotics, not only help you digest food, they release a plethora of vitamins and minerals in the gut, help prevent the onset of the runs, and…check this out…keep us calm. And oh, they seek out and destroy bacteria "known to cause rotting and human infection."

Where do the people who produce probiotics for consumption find their bacteria? Well, you'll have to get the book to find out. It's filled with fascinating tidbits. From hygiene, to beauty products, to health, food, diet, and childcare, the author does a bang-up job of explaining how germs impact us for good or ill, where they come from, how they live (and die), how they protect us, and how you can help them do so. And he does so in a highly readable, entertaining yet informative fashion.

If you want to learn how to live in harmony with those 137 trillion freeloaders that you harbor, read this book.

The author of Never be Sick Again now blows the lid off the healthcare industry. At the age of forty-eight, Raymond Francis almost died of liver failure from prescription drugs. His doctors missed the problem, even after extensive medical tests. Francis, trained in chemistry at MIT, used his scientific questioning to uncover a road back to health. "The truth is that you can prevent or reverse almost any disease—without toxic drugs or surgery—by supporting the body's innate ability to heal itself," he says. In this book he teaches how to balance and support our cell's natural healing abilities through nutrition, a toxic-free environment, and healthy patterns of behavior and lifestyle.

I spend a lot of time at the computer, slumping. So naturally, my neck and back get cranky. When this book arrived from the publisher, I was on the third day of a headache caused by improper neck alignment. I flipped to Chapter 10: Neck Problems, and read onwards to Chapters 11 and 12, learning about the culprits of neck pain (bad posture, prolonged sitting), and how to make corrections with exercises and props. I went home, practiced the exercises recommended for acute pain, and by the next day the headache was gone. A week later, twisting and bending during a workout, my lower back went into spasm. I grabbed the book and read the chapters on back pain, causes, and remedies, and practiced the exercises several times a day as suggested. When my symptoms went away, I joined the millions of others who have used the McKenzie Method to become pain-free. The method focuses on the consequences of postural neglect, and offers the knowledge and tools for self-treatment. In this updated edition of the book, which includes chapters addressing shoulder pain, you'll learn proper body mechanics for sitting, standing and sleeping. You'll discover the common causes of pain in the lower back, neck, and shoulders, and easy exercises to alleviate it immediately. Includes plenty of photos and clear instructions.
