When things don’t work out the way we want, we often believe that we’ve failed, we’re somehow damaged goods. Yet, it’s our mistakes that can open our eyes to see new possibilities and purpose. “Welcome the unwelcome,” advises Pema Chodron in the commencement address she delivered to her granddaughter’s graduating class at Naropa University. This gem of a book contains the wisdom shared on that day, and includes an in-depth interview between Chodron and Sounds True publisher Tami Simon on the fine art of failing.

Listen to the news, and you'd think the world is a violent, angry, unjust, corrupt place. Why is humanity heaping such atrocities upon each other? To the Dalai Lama, the answer is clear: a lack of compassionate moral responsibility. Change, he says, won't happen through governments. The social revolution needs to happen inside our own minds, through individual transformation. But he urges us not to be discouraged by bad news; it only reflects "a small portion of the human story. Beneath the ugly tip of that glacier lies a vast reservoir of sensitivity and kindness—and each of us can enlarge that goodness." Psychologist Daniel Goleman, the author of Emotional Intelligence, presents an up-close view of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, his wisdom, wit, joy and compassion, and his vision as a global leader. From managing our own destructive emotions, to taking action to care for those in need and heal the planet, the Dalai Lama's "map toward a better future" encompasses partnering with science, rethinking economics, overhauling the educational system, and using dialogue to end racial conflict. Yes, change happens slowly, but it's already begun, as evidenced in the people and projects showcased in this book. Read it, and you'll most likely feel inspired. If inspired to take action, readers are invited to join together in becoming "a force for good," through an accompanying Web platform.

The editors of this book have compiled words of wisdom from an eclectic group of people for an eclectic bunch of graduates. The activists, writers, visionaries, scientists, and musicians herein don't skirt the global issues of today, the stuff the media shouts from our televisions and newspapers and web pages, the scary stuff about the world heading down whatever dark alley it might be heading. They don't gloss over these issues—but they do expect a brighter tomorrow for these grads; they talk of empathy and meaningfulness and going the distance and shaping one's destiny. They talk of being "in" time, not "on" time. They talk of living inside hope. And the speakers themselves seem to be putting their hopes into the graduates before them—prodding, daring them to be courageous, to make their marks for the betterment of the planet, to make a difference in the lives of others. Who are these wise speakers? Anna Quindlen and Wynton Marsalis and Barbara Kingsolver, to name a few. Toni Morrison, Tony Kushner, Paul Hawken and Usula K. Le Guinn to name others. Within these pages the words are poetic and lyrical and humorous and honest, encouraging words to make this country smarter, this lifetime better, this moment fuller. A thoughtful, inspiring gift for the grad in your life, or even for yourself; something to dip into when you need a nudge of encouragement or a bellowing "wake up and sing your song."

Writing obituaries for almost twenty years in the tiny town of Haines, Alaska, Heather Lende likely knows a thing or two about last words of advice. Her newspaper's editor thought so, and asked Lende to write a short essay on wisdom to live by. Her succinct response? Find the good. Find the good in everything…and there is good, she points out, even in tragedy. Lende weaves together the lessons she has learned from those who have passed, and those who remain, in this collection of short and endearing essays about family, friends, pets, beginnings and endings. From the prescription to "stop and smell the fish," to the encouraging "make your own good weather," the news is intentionally good within these pages. Called "part Annie Dillard, part Anne Lamott" by the Los Angeles Times, Lende is all heart, with just the right dose of humor and honesty that this world needs.

Happiness is within, Kriyananda taught—a choice, a state of mind. It's up to us to cultivate this state, and one way is through a simple program of positive thinking and expansive living described in this book. "I suggest you take one thought at a time from the following pages," he wrote in the introduction. "Keep it before you throughout the day, as a reminder. Repeat it out loud, or mentally, letting it sink into your subconscious. And look for situations in your life to which you can apply it creatively." These short inspirational quotes are meant to guide the reader to a life of joy, emotional healing, inner freedom, self-acceptance, magnetic communication, success, peace, and prosperity. This treasury is small enough to slip into your backpack or purse, or to keep next to your bedside for a morning dose of wisdom.

This book is like spiritual popcorn: after each story you tell yourself "just one more," until suddenly you realize you ate the whole bucket. Some of the stories are dramatic tales of life or death rescue situations, while some incidents are so small they would seem trivial if it weren't for the loving touch of God so clearly felt by the people involved. And that's what makes it all so sweet: God cares just as much about the little things as the big things. Though many stories were serious or moving, a large number of them also simply left me laughing. So delightful to see how we can get ourselves into such snarls, and then "Ding!" — the Divine just slips in such a perfectly elegant solution to it all. Truly wonderful.
