Here’s a guide to tailoring your diet to your digestion. It starts with a simple test (using a soda cracker or piece of raw potato!) to determine how well you digest starch. From there, Dr Moalem, a physician (so he knows people), a neurogeneticist (so he knows DNA) and a best selling author (so it’s a good read), launches into detail. His program comprises five action “Pillars:” Eat for your genes; Reverse aging; Eat umami; Drink oolong tea; and Live slowly. Much of the advice will be familiar—avoid processed food, reduce red meat, exercise regularly—but some will not, such as the focus on “umami,” the insidious effect of emulsifiers as food additives, and the benefits of marinating meat. The book includes numerous specific health tips and ends with sample menus and recipes.

An expression of the inner self, handwriting is every bit as complex and colorful as the person who shaped the letters. In this comprehensive study guide and reference book, the authors describe the many ways handwriting differs and what these differences mean. Size, shape, slope, regularity, spacing, rhythm, speed and pressure of the writing all give clues—all reveal attitudes. For such a small book (196 pages) the authors cover an immense territory, yet they do it well, never forgetting the need to interpret specific characteristics in terms of the whole. Every aspect is amply illustrated. The final chapters address how to analyze children’s and teen writing (by ages), and how to begin doing your own handwriting analyses.

If you think eating vegan is for wimps, the Engine 2 Diet could change your mind. Author Rip Esselstyn was a firefighter when he wrote this book; vegan for 20+ years, he thrived in a world where, if you weren't strong, smart and alert, you were—literally-- toast. His “plant-strong” diet is simple: whole fruits, grains and vegetables; no sugar, meat, dairy, or processed oils. What separates this book from its peers are the three approaches Esselstyn recommends to get you plant-strong. First, he details two ways to transition to the vegan lifestyle: gradual, or cold-turkey. Second, he includes three levels of exercise routines, beginning to advanced, which target your legs, arms, core, and cardiovascular system. And third, throughout the book, he teaches how to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your stuff from fire. A good read, with plenty of practical advice (and recipes).

The psoas (pronounced “so-ass”, the P is silent) is the muscle connecting the top of your body to your legs.  While that sounds crucial, Ellgen emphasizes that the psoas is just one of myriad factors determining overall health, and she strives to present its role in context.  Comprehensive, straightforward and practical, this book gets immediately down to business with two simple tests to determine if your psoas is healthy.  Two sets of exercises follow:  one for flexibility, one for strength.  The book ends with four exercise routines for specific concerns, such as people seeking pain relief, or those with a sedentary lifestyle.  Clearly described and illustrated, the 50 exercises themselves are drawn from yoga, Pilates, and typical weight-training.

"Tidying up" seems an exquisitely genteel way to describe clearing clutter, but the approach proposed here is something like a kamikaze attack. The author, Japanese and a self-confessed compulsive Tidier since age 5, offers advice based on experience: Clear by category, not by location. Start with the easiest (clothes) and leave the difficult (memorabilia) till last. For each category, collect everything in a pile; sort by touch; save what gives you a Spark of Joy, discard the rest. Do not drag out the process; tidy up and then get on with your life. It’s a short book, written with simplicity, charm, and convincing certainty. No one, she says, who has followed her method has ever relapsed back into slothful clutter. It’s guaranteed to refresh your space and your life.

Here’s a fun, fat little book. With or without a baby, you can use it to learn what all your friends’ names mean and gain a new perspective on the importance of a name (Shakespeare notwithstanding). In the introduction, Griffin first discusses the variety of factors that impact name choice, from sound and sense to contemporary fads—including why you would want to stick with time-tested names. The short descriptions of the thousand names give not only literal linguistic origin but also the nuances of meaning that have come to be associated with each name.

Based on his previous books, we know that Pollan always speaks important truths, in a lucid, thoroughly engaging way. Cooked is no exception. Here Pollan records experiments in his own kitchen, tutored by four masters, in the techniques of barbeque, braising, making bread, and fermenting. In each case, he records the what, why, and how of all that he learns. At the same time, a thread of comment on America’s food culture winds throughout, documenting in yet more ways how Americans are eating more but enjoying it less.
