Gyudmed Monks: Art of Compassion Tour 2012Saturday, July 21—Sunday, July 29
Gyudmed Monks: Art of Compassion Tour 2012

The Tibetan Buddhist monks from the Gyudmed Tantric Monastery are religious scholars and masters in the Tibetan sacred art of the sand mandala. These mandalas are constructed of millions of grains of brightly colored sand, arranged in intricate designs of flowers, animals, and Tibetan sacred symbols. The creators of a sand mandala accrue merit which they transmit for the benefit of all sentient beings, as well as for those who view the mandala and even those who hear of its creation. Sand mandalas were traditionally created in monasteries where lay people could never see them. Thanks to these monks traveling in the West, we’ll be able to watch the entire mandala creation process as it unfolds over the course of their 9-day stay at East West.
The monks will also give several presentations on Buddhist art and meditation in the evenings. You’ll learn about thangkas—the cloth paintings that serve as teaching tools, depicting the life of the Buddha, or illustrating other spiritual subjects—and even get to create your own. Thursday will feature butter sculpting, in which offerings are made of butter intricately modeled and colored in the traditional forms of buddhas, flowers, animals, and auspicious symbols. These artforms are considered central to spiritual development in Tibetan Buddhism.
All proceeds from this tour go to Tibetan Living Communities, a non-profit organization dedicated to the improvement of education and healthcare for Tibetans in India and Tibet.

About the Monks:
Yeshi Dorjee was born in Bhutan to Tibetan parents, and has been a monk of Gyudmed monastery for over 40 years. He received full ordination from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1980. He holds a Geshe Ngarampa degree, and his art has been published and displayed at the Smithsonian Museum, in countless collections around the world, and in the office of the Dalai Lama. www.yeshiart.com
Lobsang Dorjee was born in Tibet, where he became a monk. In 1990, after studying basic prayers, he escaped to India via the Himalayan Mountains to get a complete Buddhist education. After he received blessings from H.H. the Dalai Lama, he joined Gyudmed monastery and completed a degree in Buddhist Philosophy, Ritual, and Tibetan Sacred and Traditional Arts.
Lobsang T. Phartsang is a former Tibetan Buddhist monk who has studied Buddhism for over 25 years. He served as monastery administrator and traveled to America, Russia, Europe and Singapore for over 5 years, giving lectures and art exhibitions. He is the founder and president of Tibetan Living Communities (TLC), USA.
